What families say after TAVI and MitraClip

Every patient's story is different. These are a few, shared with permission, to help you understand what the journey feels like.

My father was 78 and three different hospitals told us open-heart surgery was too risky at his age. Dr. Phatarpekar assessed him and said TAVI was possible. The procedure was done in two hours. He walked the next day. We still can't believe it.

My mother had been breathless for two years. After MitraClip she climbed stairs again within a month. What we valued most was how plainly everything was explained — we never felt rushed or confused.

We came for a second opinion after being advised open surgery. The team reviewed everything and within a week had a plan for TAVI. Six months later my husband is playing cricket with the grandchildren. This team gave us our life back.

Told you need open-heart surgery?
Ask us first.

Many patients who were advised open surgery are TAVI or MitraClip candidates. A second opinion costs nothing to ask for — and could change everything. We review existing reports and scans as a starting point.

Questions families ask us most

Is TAVI safe for elderly patients aged 75–85? +
Yes — TAVI was specifically designed for older and high-risk patients. Age alone is not a barrier. What matters is overall heart function, valve anatomy, and the presence of other medical conditions. Our Heart Team evaluates all of these carefully before recommending any procedure. Many of our most successful cases have involved patients in their 80s.
What is the difference between TAVI and open-heart surgery (SAVR)? +
Open-heart surgery (SAVR) requires the chest to be opened and the heart stopped while a bypass machine keeps blood circulating. Recovery takes 6–8 weeks. TAVI delivers a new valve through a blood vessel in the leg — no chest incision, no bypass in most cases. Hospital stay is 2–4 days. Recovery takes 1–2 weeks for most patients. Both approaches are effective — the right choice depends on your anatomy, risk profile, and overall health.
How much does TAVI cost in Mumbai in 2026? +
Total TAVI procedure cost in Mumbai typically ranges from ₹12–20 lakh, depending on the valve device used, choice of partner hospital, and complexity of the case. The valve itself (device cost) makes up the largest component — Indian-made valves such as Meril Myval are available at lower cost than some imported options. We provide a transparent cost breakdown during consultation. Read our detailed TAVI cost guide →
Do I need a referral letter to consult The Valve Clinic? +
No. You can contact us directly — as a patient, family member, or as a GP or cardiologist referring a patient. Simply call, WhatsApp, or complete our short enquiry form. Sharing any existing echo or CT scans helps us give you a faster, more informed response.
Which hospitals in Mumbai perform TAVI with The Valve Clinic team? +
We perform procedures at six leading partner hospitals: P.D. Hinduja Hospital, Breach Candy Hospital, Wockhardt Hospitals, SL Raheja Hospital, Symbiosis Specialty Hospital, and Masina Hospital. The choice of hospital is guided by your location, insurance coverage, and clinical needs — one of the unique advantages of our independent, multi-hospital model.
What is MitraClip (TEER) and who needs it? +
MitraClip (formally called TEER — Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair) is a minimally invasive treatment for a leaking mitral valve (Mitral Regurgitation). A small clip is delivered by catheter and placed on the mitral valve leaflets to reduce the leak. It is recommended when mitral regurgitation is moderate-to-severe and causing breathlessness, fatigue, or repeated hospitalisations — especially when open surgery is felt to be too risky. Learn more about TEER →
How long does the TAVI valve last? +
Current generation TAVI valves are designed and tested for 10–15+ years of durability. Long-term data continues to emerge as the procedure has grown globally since 2002. Regular echo follow-ups are recommended to monitor valve function. If the valve ever requires re-treatment in the future, a "valve-in-valve" TAVI procedure is an established option — meaning even follow-up treatment can often be done without open surgery.
What is a second opinion and why is it important before heart valve surgery? +
A second opinion means having a different specialist review your diagnosis, scans, and treatment recommendation — independently of the first doctor. It is particularly valuable before heart valve surgery because: (1) Not all surgeons are familiar with the latest minimally invasive options; (2) Some patients advised open surgery are actually suitable for TAVI or MitraClip; (3) Timing matters — some patients are better managed medically for now. We offer second opinion reviews of existing reports and scans. Learn how our second opinion process works →
